The idea
The experience revolves around the creative process of one of the exhibition’s painters: how he built a piece layer by layer, on stone, with one color per layer.
How it works
First you read how the painter worked. Then you pick one of his works and paint it with the same technique, one layer at a time and one color per layer.
The twist
Just like the original technique, when you switch colors the previous layer disappears from the screen. You don’t see your piece until you “print” every layer on top of each other.
You don’t see your work until you print it. Just like the artist.
Why it works
The constraint is the lesson. Instead of explaining in a wall text that the artist didn’t see his full work until the end, the experience puts you in that exact spot. You understand it because you lived it.
And you leave with something physical: the only way to see your work was to print it, so every visitor walked out holding theirs.
